How to use PlantID.net photos in your own
projects
PlantID.net has a huge palate of images tied to
specific taxon IDs. If you know the
rules, you can use most of these in your own non-commercial projects.
All my photographers and illustrators (I’ll call
them authors below) have given me their explicit permission to use their images
in PlantID.net. I’ve also gotten some
images old textbooks that are in the public domain.
Most authors have released their photos under a
Creative Commons copyright, which means they will allow you to copy their
images without their explicit permission as long as all of these apply:
·
Don’t use photos that
have a © in front of the author’s initials.
About 20% of PlantID.net’s photos are marked © All rights reserved, and you
may not use them without getting explicit permission from the author.
·
Your use is
non-commercial. For instance, you can’t
copy a photo to be included in a book you’ll sell without getting explicit
permission.
·
Creative Commons
requires that you acknowledge the author, and provide a link to their specific
Creative Commons terms and a way for your readers to get in touch with them. PlantID.net does this by putting the author’s
initials in every photo and providing a link to https://plantid.net/Contributors.aspx.
You may do the same if you wish, leaving the author’s initials in the image and
adding the Contributors link to the bottom of your page.
