Chaparral

Chaparral is a habitat unique to California, a collection of plants that do well in nutrient-poor soil with wet winters and dry summers.  These plants have adapted to summer droughts and regenerate quickly after wildfire.

This habitat was named by the Spanish, based on their word chaparro, which means short.  This is a good description, because there are no big trees.
