California Floristic Province
The California
Floristic Province covers most of the non-desert parts of California, plus some
of southern Oregon, a tiny piece of Nevada and northern Baja.

This area has a
Mediterranean-type climate, with cool, wet winters and dry, warm summers.
Interestingly, of the
5,000 or so California native plant species, over 2,000 (about 40%) of these
plants are native only in the
California Floristic Province. These
plants have made adaptations to thrive in this unique climate, and those
changes do not allow them to spread beyond this specific area.
