Monterey Pine (Pinus radiata) Login         


        Description
  • 5 inch needles in 3s.
  • Branches tilt upwards.
  • Similar to Bishop Pine, which has needles in 2s, and Knobcone Pine, which has a sharp spine on its cone.
  • Cones are asymmetrical with scales mostly closed until heated in a fire.
  • Mostly found along the California coast.
  • CA native. Interestingly, considered both rare in the wild and invasive. It is widely cultivated.
  • CNPS 1B Rare, threatened or endangered.
  • Pine Family (Pinaceae)



Candelabra of new growth. Needles are bright green with a blunt tip.



Several cones grow from the same place on the stem.



Often found at the edge of clearings.
