Look for a big yellow flowers and large woolly leaves, shaped like a mule's ears.
Similar plants are Narrow Mule's Ears (leaves not woolly) and Arrowleaf Balsam Root (Leaves shaped like arrows with reverse
lobes
at the base).
Flowers are among the leaves, or just above them.
Found in open areas in the Sierra foothills.

Aster Family (Asteraceae)
Flowers are large (about 4") with yellow centers and about a dozen yellow "petals". Leaves are quite woolly.
Dense hairs make green leaves look grey. Leaves are oval, over a foot long, and pointed on both ends.
Common in open areas, especially in the eastern Sierra.
